Περίληψη:	The article considers the so-called ″Danube road” from Singidunum to the estuary of the river and to the Black Sea. Described are the elements of construction of the road during the first century A. D., the morphological peculiarities of some points, such as the Iron Gates, the cities or forts which were linked with one another, according to the Tabula Peutingeriana and the Itineraria Antonini, its main stations-crossroads in directions to the North or South (f. e. the via militaris), the materials and the techniques for the construction of the road and the repairs which took place in Late Antiquity, using as testimony the milliaria of the Danube road. Reference is also made to the construction of roman and early byzantine bridges, with the purpose of joining the two banks of the river, and also to the navigation along it, either for military purposes or for the transfer of products to the cities and the forts of the Danube. Primary interest is focused on the use of the Danube road by the byzantine army or the barbarian invaders, by citing the relevant fragments from the sources. As a conclusion, the greater importance of navigation in Late Antiquity is noted and the transformation of the roman road from a connecting point between East and West to a defence line of the Byzantine Empire against invasions from the North.
