Περίληψη: The present paper aims to present the uses and functions of geography in Modern Greek historical traditions. The use of historical geography as a tool for approaching the past remains a typical component ofGreek learned historical activities during the 19th and the first part of the 20th century. Intensive preoccupation with historical geography and local history gradually form a specific domain, a second zone of historical production. This domain is characterized by erudite inquiry which, adopting the dominant historiographic patterns, is inspired by patriotic motives, and is guided by antiquarian and anthropological curiosity; although the products ofthis peculiar approach follow diverse methodologies they keep in common a typical empiric approach and a firm faith in the value ofisolated literary, archeological, and anthropological evidence. These long-lasting and not always unofficial manifestations of Greek learned historiography have deep roots and a spectacular diffusion. The historicity ofspace remains one of the permanent topics of Modern Greek scholarly undertakings, agent and product of the rising modernity, which gradually decays and crumbles into a multitude of historical and geographical compositions of local or regional range. The antiquarian’s research on the historicity ofspace (the author’s homeland as a rule) covers step by step all the Greek areas; it increases in the case ofthe lands also claimed by neighbors and form spurious and fragmented expressions of the national ideology. The “official”, political historiography will keep a safe distance from antiquarian interest in local history and historical geography. Only during the 1920s and under the pressure of the geopolitical approaches, can we distinguish an interest in the geographic factors of history. However, the geopolitical influences remain stronger in Modern Greek historical geography than to political historiography. It is after 1960 that the learned and antiquarian product will be recuperated by the history ofideas and used us a hermeneutic component ofhistory. Within this scheme, the analysis will focus on the ideological functions of geography, of travel literature and of cartography, especially the ones covering the period of the “Greek Enlightenment”. It is after 1980 that Greek history will turn really towards the history of space (geography, travel literature and cartography), as an answer to the international shift towards the historical study ofthe perceptions and representations ofspace but also by the awareness of Greek historiography ofthe geographical issues in history (by the introduction of the Annales methodology in Greek social and economic history). Research has been conducted in this direction towards the collection and the study of the related material. The fields explored hitherto include Greek geography and cartography of the 18th century, the diffusion of geographical knowledge on the learned and educational level during the 19th century, the vernacular perceptions ofsacred and secular space and the history of cartography, as well as the development ofvarious strategies concerning the administration ofspace. Although quite a few younger historians are specialized in these fields, and relevant publications and Ph. D. dissertations are multiple, these varied approaches do not shape a distinctive historiographic group and they do not tend to form a specific field. We could say that during the last two decades the historical approach of the politics and the poetics ofspace represent a growing topic of Modern Greek historiography, an encounter of diverse scientific priorities and methodologies.
