Περίληψη:	The paper provides an overview of the history of Kievan Rus’ from its beginnings, defined by the occupation of Kiev in 882, until its subjugation to the Mongols in 1240. Reference to its precursor, the hegemony of Novgorod, which is related to the so-called ‘‘invitation of the princes’’ and the arrival of Scandinavian rulers in Eastern Europe is also made. The presentation of the whole issue is structured on the basis of the three historical phases of Kievan Rus’ (882–988, 988–1169, 1169–1240), with the most important historical events in terms of inner organization, foreign policy, cultural influences, etc. In this context, the significance of the relations with Scandinavia, Byzantium and the steppe world is highlighted at each phase respectively. These three factors could be considered decisives for the political structures and state organization (Scandinavia), the cultural orientation through Christianization (Byzantium) and the weakening as well as the collapse of Kievan Rus’ (Cumans and Mongols).
