During their visits, these travellers came into contact with Athonite monks who commonly did not fully appreciate the worth of their books and reacted in various ways to the foreigners’ requests. In this paper two major instances of scholars’ interest in Athonite libraries are examined, that of Cyriac of Ancona (mid 15th century) and the Greek Minas Minoidis (mid 19th century), about whom we have sufficient information. Amongst the aspects examined are their level of knowledge, their motives, the monks’ stance towards both scholarship and the different characters of the foreigners. The consequences of the monks’ realisation of the value of their monastery collections are also investigated. %> Αποθετήριο Ήλιος / ΕΙΕ
