This was the first such meeting in thirty years and was conceived as a sequel in the tradition of scholarly dialogue between the academic communities of the two countries, but it was from many points of view markedly different from the previous one symposium in Thessaloniki. Although the Phanariote epoque, tradition and culture remained constant points of reference, our focus in the Athens meeting was broader and was informed by a genuine comparative perspective, which attempted to go beyond the parallel narratives that largely made up the contributions to the Thessaloniki meeting, and to move towards an interwoven narrative of shared historical and cultural experiences. The conference was meant to enhance dialogue within the Balkan scholarly community, and it was specifically inspired by a concern to broaden and enrich the field of Greek-Romanian intellectual exchange. This exchange is not only marked by the depth of an extensive and multifaceted shared historical experience, but it is also animated at present by a shared European sensibility and the aspiration of a serious renewal in the world of ideas, a renewal that will guard its authenticity by being true to the multiple legacies of an extremely rich, if often painful, past.
