Περίληψη:	The prehistoric settlement of Promahonas/Topolnica lies 6 km W of the village of Promahonas and 2 km SE of the village of Topolnica, just above the Strymon valley in the NE foothills of Mount Kerkini. It covers an area of some 4.2 ha, of which approximately 0.2 ha is in Bulgarian territory. The settlement's distinctive position, straddling the Greek-Bulgarian border, provided the motivation for the first joint Greek-Bulgarian excavation programme. Excavation in the Greek sector in 1993 was carried out in 4 sections (AD). The architectural remains include a hearth, part of which was located in section A a few centimetres below the surface. It is presumed that ploughing has destroyed the architectural structures in the upper layer, which was excavated in all the sections. In the next layer down, the floor of which must be 0.5 m below the surface, postholes which probably belonged to some unidentified structure were located in section B. The finds include pottery, tools, figurines, and everyday artefacts. The pottery included categories that typify specific areas, such as Akropotamos and Gradeshnitsa, as also categories with Bitum- and Notenkopf-type decoration. The latter two types are characteristic of central European pottery. According to the pottery finds, as also the radio dating carried out on finds from the Bulgarian sector (which has been completely excavated), the two upper habitation layers located during the first excavation period in 1993 in the Greek sector date to the late 6th and early 5th millennium BC.
