Περίληψη:	The historical unity of the Aeolian region in the early modern period can be characteristically illustrated on a cultural level by the fortune of the ideas of the Enlightenment in the respective insular and continental geographical components of the area. In contrast to other regions of the Greek East, the Ionian islands for example, the impact of the Enlightenment was felt in Aeolia rather late, but it experienced a remarkable blooming during the first twenty years of the 19th century, with its epicentre in the town ofAyvalik (Kydonies) and its famous school. A noteworthy feature of the Aeolian Enlightenment had been the fact that although its human resources (scholars, teachers, students) came for the most part from the insular space ofLesvos, the Enlightenment itself as an expression of cultural change was enacted across the water on the opposite continental Aeolian littoral. In terms of human geography Lesvos appears as the social hinterland, whereas the town of Ayvalik emerges as the main stage of the Enlightenment. The purpose of our contribution is to attempt to interpret the forms of social interaction in the Aeolian geographical region that provided the Enlightenment’s infrastructure and to sketch the intellectual profile ofthe movement in the twenty years ofits blossoming.
