Περίληψη:	Following the termination ofthe Greek war ofindependence a stream ofmemoirs, historical accounts and biographies of the main participants attempted to justify the actions and points of view of all those involved in the epoch-making events marking the birth of the new Greece. The justification of the liberation struggle would be based on testimonies by Greek and foreign fighters and observers, who had participated both in heroic deeds and in civil and sectional conflicts. The biographies dating in the early decades following the Revolution were written by people closely connected with the subjects of their works. Towards the end of the period we encounter professional historians producing biographies. Besides individual biographies, literary histories composed primarily in the 1860s contain biographical data on scholars and educators from the period 1453-1821, on the assumption that the period in question had been the immediate historical background of the modern Greek society shaped after 1821. From 1821 onward it was considered imperative to produce biographies of all those who had distinguished themselves in all sectors of public life. These efforts were given consistent expression in the eight-volume work by Anastasios Goudas, Parallel Lives (Athens 1869-1876). In its pages the biographies of “those who had distinguished themselves in the regeneration of Greece” are supplemented by biographical accounts of their prominent ancestors or predecessors in the position, at which they served. The long prolegomena to each section and Goudas’ digressions enrich the work, making it a little too heavy at times. Goudas had undertaken archival research and had also collected oral testimonies through local investigations. Biographical projects were supplemented by the collection of the portraiture of prominent Greeks. Marinos Papadopoulos Vretos published in Paris an eleven-volume National Calendar (1861-1871), carrying illustrations of unprecedented quality for a Greek publication. Besides pictures ofsettlements, landscapes, antiquities, works of art and scenes of daily life, it contains hundreds of portraits of illustrious Greek and foreign men and women. Among them there are 294 portraits of Greeks from the eighteenth century to 1821, but also pictures of living Greeks, who had distinguished themselves in Greece and in the diaspora.
