Περίληψη: | Commerce is an economic activity that led a good number of local and migrant
merchants, operating within the Ottoman Empire and later the Greek State, into
international trading. The commercial transactions themselves constitute the
platform where merchants of different origin and nationality meet in various
locations: from the early Greek merchant communities in western and central
Europe, Asia Minor and Russia, to the Greek ports ofThessaloniki, Syros, Patras,
and so on. From the 18th century until the establishment of the Modern Greek
State we find historic testimonies that identify the merchant as the dominant
cultural and social figure of the communities in the areas then under Ottoman
occupation as well as in the Greek migrant communities. Merchants and their
activities formulated the economy ofthe market, which had characteristics that at
times and under certain conditions constituted a uniformed economic culture.
Historiographic production in Greece, as regards international commercial
activity in the Ottoman and Greek zone, focuses on activities such as the
exploitation of the farming surplus, the transportation of goods amongst major
Mediterranean port cities, as well as shipping activities. These themes are an
integral part of Greek economic history. The history of the merchant is often
reflected through the study of Greek communities abroad. Although commerce is
a very internationalised activity that attracted many merchants into international
and cross-border transactions, the absence of relative comparative studies is
evident.
Two main historiographic channels referring to commercial activities outline
and promote the image ofthe merchant in Greek historiography.
A' The first historiographic approach highlights the prevalence of a
nationalistic view of economic issues: the positive attitude towards commerce and
merchants in modern Greek historiography stems from their contribution in the
preparation of the revolution in 1821 and the phenomenon of benefactors. Here
we have the merchant who appears without any real commercial activity before and
during the Greek revolution.Β' The second historiographic approach is driven by the political-ideological
burden of historical interpretation. Such approach forms a negative stand against
commerce and the merchant, which is founded on Marxist or relevant analysis and
is found mainly in political, or sociological studies concerning the complete
detailed account of the historic course of the Greek state. Actually, the issue
emerging here is that of commercial capitalism against industrial development or
the analysis of the social structure in Greek society and the prevailing class issues. |
