Περίληψη:	First, an outline is given of the attempt made by historians, mainly French historians, to describe a “new object”, namely the mental attitudes ofsocieties, the so-called mentalities. This is a key concept ofwhat is known as “the new history”; such attitudes have constituted an object of research in the field of historical science following the development of a critical stance towards conventional historiography with the realisation that it was unable to provide an adequate understanding of an epoch. The successive terminologies used to convey the concept and content of this new field are also presented. In Greek historiography this area ofstudy made its first overt appearance at the end of the 1970s and grew more dynamic during the 1980s, when the term noottopies (mentalities) became established as its name. To the question ofwhether this way of looking at things, “observation”, had been totally lacking in previous years, the answer is no; it is simply that historians had not formulated the necessary series of questions to apply to their sources. Questions, that is, which would explore the sources as regards the expression of collective bodies, and in particular of those groups that did not leave clearly visible traces over the passage of time since the written word was inaccessible to them. Thus, even when the primary documentary material, the written word in all its forms, existed, here too the questions needed to be posed differently in order to elicit the requisite answers; in addition, a broadening of documentation needed to be made. An examination of the development of Greek historiography in this direction follows: how, in other words, from being oriented mainly towards serving the needs of national unification and thus until recently following —with very few exceptions- the traditional idealistic manner of writing, it formulated a new way of seeing things; and who were the individuals (amateur historians, historians, folklorists, writers) who sowed the first seeds of this new approach in the 19th century and later, in the 20th century, by submitting the known sources to new questions, followed this new way of looking at things, used the new methodology and systematically cultivated the new history
