Περίληψη:	The paper firstly notes the recession of scholarly output in the field of Greek economic and social history during the 1990s and considers that the dialogue between history and the other social sciences and with economic and political studies initiated in the 1970s and 1980s rather failed than succeeded. The next part offers a short comment on recent trends in historiography suggesting that they should be analyzed in the broader context of changing world power balance, sociopolitical changes and inter-professional conflicts in the interior of the Academy. Referring to the history of Greek industrialization and the new pathways that recent studies have opened, the paper reports on the significant contributions in the field of the history of technology and techniques as well as in the fields of industrial archaeology, social and labour history. The different phases of the industrial process have been grouped together, around the central focus provided by the growth ofthe internal market and the mobility (alternating mobility) ofthe working force. Other subjects such as the study of the accumulation process and the distribution ofthe surplus need further refinements. Greece as a latecomer to the industrial world can be better understood outside the framework set by national readings of the industrial phenomenon, mainly through studies that promote a comparative perspective upon the social and economic history of the major Mediterranean port-cities.
