| Περίληψη: | The life history of Kyrillos Liverios (1785?-1853) reveals many elements of the typical «intellectual» involved in political action during the Greek War of Independence. The article investigates the formation of his liberal views before 1821, his political activity during the War of Independence, as well as his life afterwards. He came from Naupaktia but we find him in Constantinople during 1806-1816. With the finacial aid of the «Philomousos Society (Etaireia)» of Vienna, he attended lectures at the universities of Würzburg, Leipzig, Jena and Göttingen from 1815 to 1821. In April 1821, along with other students, he came to Greece, accompanying Dimitrios Ypsilantis, in order to participate in the War of Independence. At first he was appointed by Ypsilantis head of the siege of Athens and from 1822 on he was associated with Alexandros Mavrokordatos, with whom he remained closely connected until the end of his life. Liverios is an interesting case of a West-oriented intellectual who contributed substantially to the constitution of the institutions of the revolted nation. After the War of Independence, he was appointed in several posi tions as a civil servant, always facing financial problems. |
