| Περίληψη: | Saint John the Theologian’s Monastery in Patmos founded in 1088 was a major monastic center throughout the late byzantine and post byzantine periods. In the 16th century, following the ottoman conquest, the Monastery developed a dense network of metochia in the Cyclades. The oldest archival document pertaining to the possession of land property by the Monastery on Naxos dates from 1592. The document is edited and amply commented in this paper. However, there is evidence that the monks had already been familiar with Naxos for a long time. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the origins of the relations between the Monastery and Naxos. Textual and archeological evidence suggests that the Monastery had ties with the local population in the late 13th century. The so-called arsenite schism might have been related to this effect. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the Monastery owned property on Naxos during this early period. Nevertheless, it seems that the locals venerated Saint John the Theologian and respected the Monastery and that there might have been communication through pilgrimage. Individual donations to the Monastery, attested already in the 15th century, became more frequent in the 16th century, when the pax ottomanica enabled the Monastery to acquire, through donation and purchase, lands in the Aegean. |
