Περίληψη:	The coinage of Alexander continues to amaze and raise all sorts of questions. Although it was issued in significant quantities and was produced in several mints, we still have to deal with the difficulties of the secure attribution of a number of series to specific mints, and of dating the coinages during or after Alexander’s lifetime. Hoard evidence could provide precious aid in that direction, as usually for the dating of coin issues, but unfortunately the dating of hoards is not always precise. The period covered by the present paper is rather limited, since Ptolemy ‘innovated’ and quickly replaced the types in the name of Alexander with his own. As Mørkholm remarked in his study of early Hellenistic coinage, “only Ptolemy in Egypt was an innovator (…). The other rulers adhered strictly to the well-established alexander tradition. They continued it after the death of Alexander iv, and Cassander and Antigonus were still minting in gold and silver with the name of alexander unchanged, even after they had assumed the royal title”. It is therefore worth examining the situation in Cyprus, before moving to Cyrene and concluding with Egypt, where Ptolemy based his economy and progressively built his own empire.
