Περίληψη:	The chapter explores the varied layers of meaning that overlapped in Atlas’ image during the late medieval and early modern period, as he embodied the human intelligence of the pattern of the universe. He was associated with the prime mover and the universal axis, and therefore he acted as metaphor for astrological insight and universal knowledge, cosmic order and Divine Providence or even as a metaphor for moral responsibility; cosmographers and astronomers used his image to indicate their task to explore the cosmic rationality. The decay of geocentric astrological cosmology in the sixteenth century transformed Atlas to an emblematic figure of geographical panoptism. The seventeenth- and eighteenth-century commercial cartography retained Atlas’ image as an Earth bearer, which become the trademark for the multivolume collections of maps.
