Περίληψη:	Les reliures historiques aussi bien que leurs représentations dans les périodes byzantines précoce et moyenne révèlent la nature aux multiples facettes du codex comme moyen de transmission de la connaissance mais aussi comme artefact. Les circonstances et courants politiques, économiques, théologiques et artistiques transparaissent au travers de sa production, tandis que son rôle dans le cadre liturgique de l’église révèle le profond ancrage de la fonction symbolique du livre saint. Cet article examine la nature et la fonction complexes du livre à Byzance, en soulignant les similarités et les différences qui existent entre les reliures conservées et la manière dont le livre est représenté dans l’art byzantin. Historical bindings as well as their representations in the early and middle Byzantine art reveal the multifaceted nature of the codex as a means for the transmission of knowledge but also as an artifact. In its production political, financial, theological and art historical circumstances and currents are imprinted, while its function within the liturgical setting of the church reveals the deeply embedded symbolic function of the sacred book. This paper delves into the complex nature and function of the book in Byzantium, drawing attention to similarities and differences between surviving bindings and the way the book is represented in Byzantine art.
